The Art of the Purge: Spring Cleaning and the Reluctant Child

Spring cleaning is in full swing over here! Is anyone else tackling the annual declutter? My kids' room had reached a critical point of nightly messiness. Enough was enough! Operation "Room Turnover" commenced, and all the contents landed in the living room. Shock and then overwhelmed were the initial reactions upon their return from school. The new rule? No privileges until every single item was sorted.

Living on Oahu, especially in town, every square foot is precious. Clutter is wasted space. My youngest, in particular, felt the weight of the task. His first instinct was to donate everything. It's a familiar human response. When faced with a daunting task, it often leads to inaction. So, we introduced the three-pile method: donate, maybe, and keep. The three-pile method, however, provided a manageable framework.
